Goosey Tips from Megan

All Quilt Versions

The method for making the Flying Geese blocks is the same for each version of the quilt, its just the total number of geese varies between the Large quilts and Baby quilts. Fabrics 1–7 will be used to make each set. Follow the directions on page 6 to make four-at-a-time flying geese.

If you are a fan of spray starch, this is a great time to whip it out. You're cutting the geese units on the bias and they can become stretched out if over handled. A little spritz of starch can help prevent stretching by reinforcing your fabric.

Megan's favorite way to make flying geese is to use a fun directional print for the geese and a non-directional fabric for the outer portion of the block. When you construct the blocks, start with your center square oriented the same way each time. This way you'll get four geese blocks, each with the central triangle design oriented a different way to match the orientation of the geese sashing.

As mentioned last week, from Fabrics 1–7 you may find yourself with a little extra fabric to play with. Megan likes to cut a few extra pieces for the four-at-a-time flying geese β€” an extra set (1 center square and 4 corner units) is great insurance for any wonky units. Keep your additional fabric handy in case you want to switch something out while designing your blocks.
