Week 2 of the Butterdish Quilt Along is here and it's time to get cutting! If you're just joining us, welcome! It's not too late to jump in. Catch up on all the details in the Butterdish Quilt Along announcement post and check out the prize pool post to see what's up for grabs.
By now you should have chosen which of the four versions you're sewing, Large Panel Quilt, Large Quilt, Baby Panel Quilt, or Baby Quilt and have your fabrics selected. This week is all about getting your cuts prepped and ready to sew. Megan has some tips and tricks below to make cutting go smoothly.

Cutting Tips from Megan
Quilts with Panels
Heads up for paper pattern holders: We have one small cutting correction for the Large Quilt with Panel version. On Page 2, Fabric 5, it should read:
Cut 1 strip 3½" x WOF and subcut:
1 — 15½" x 3½" piece C
1 — 12½" x 3½" piece D
For the panels, you'll need 16 (or 4 for the baby version) 12½" x 12½" panels. You can use the Mystic Fable panel motifs, any large scale fabrics, or any 12½" unfinished block. A large square ruler is perfect for centering your panel designs.
From your colorful fat quarters, two will be used for the Center Squares — medium scale prints or fun motifs work beautifully here as they anchor your flying geese. You'll have some extra strips from the remaining fat quarters, so don't be afraid to mix things up and have fun with your fabric!
From Fabrics 1–7, you may find yourself with a little extra fabric to play with. Megan likes to cut a few extra pieces for the four-at-a-time flying geese — an extra set of four is great insurance for any wonky units. Keep your additional fabric handy in case you want to switch something out while designing your blocks.
Large & Baby Quilt (No Panel)
The Large and Baby Quilt versions substitute additional log cabin strips in place of the panel and are pieced in an improvisational manner. This week you'll be cutting larger strips and further subcutting them as you go.
One important thing to remember: each strip needs a buddy to complete the "L" shape in the Half Log Cabin block. Make sure to reserve at least two of the same fabric strip, especially for the larger pieces in the outer sections.
If you're doing this version, you'll have a little less cutting to do this week — get your strips sorted and we'll see you next week!
