Before the event, Sewtopia collaborates with Windham Fabrics to choose six fabrics for the Fabric Challenge. A few months prior to the event, each participant will receive six fat quarters. While participating in the Fabric Challenge is optional, it is highly recommended.

The rules are straightforward. You may use one or all of the fabrics, as long as only Windham Fabrics are used in your finished project. During check in, attendees will be invited to submit their projects to be eligible for ribbons and prizes.

The highlight of our weekend get together is exploring fabric and quilt shops in the area with us. Think of it as a shopping version of a pub crawl. Stay tuned for additional details and confirmation of participating shops as the event approaches.

Sewtopia’s Sewing Lounge will open on Thursday, November 5th at 5:00pm, or earlier depending on the Shop Hop, and will close at midnight. It will reopen on Friday and Saturday at 8:00am and close at midnight. Sunday’s hours will be 8:00am to noon.

Attendees will receive communication before the event about seating arrangements. We will assign tables and groupings based on your seating requests. If you bring your sewing machine or belongings, you will not need to transport them back to your room, as Sewtopia and the hotel will secure the main ballroom each night. Feel free to use this time to finish projects or explore the area with friends.

General tools will be provided in the sewing room, including irons, cutting mats, and rotary cutters.

In 2017, Sewtopia launched its online store, followed by the opening of our physical shop in December 2020. We’re always updating the store with fabrics, notions, and more. We’re bringing the shop on the road with a small but mighty pop up full of new fabrics from our favorite manufacturers like Ruby Star Society, Windham Fabrics, Robert Kaufman, and others. Make sure to leave a little extra room to bring home plenty of goodies.

Sewtopia will host one official swap that attendees may participate in. This is a blind swap, meaning we will not assign you a partner. If you choose to participate, please bring your wrapped swap item to check in. If you bring an item to swap, you will receive one back. Swap items will be distributed at the end of Friday night for you to open on Saturday morning.

Rules:

• If you’re on Instagram, please use the hashtag #sewtopiaswap so others can cheer you on.
• The recommended spending limit is $15. Don’t break the bank.
• Bring your wrapped swap gift to Sewtopia at check in. Please make sure it has a gift tag attached with your information.
• Your gift must be clearly labeled with who it is from and firmly attached.
• Suggestions for gifts include a tool organizer, a large pillow, your favorite bag, or another handmade favorite. Each year the gifts keep getting bigger and better. Check out #sewtopiaswap for inspiration.
• Make something you love out of fabrics you adore.
• The Sewtopia team will hand out the swap items Friday night after the Sewing Lounge closes. Your gift will be waiting at your sewing station Saturday morning for you to open.
• If you choose not to participate, no worries. Gifts will only be distributed to those who joined the swap.

This unofficial official swap is run by our fantastic attendee, Rhiannon. Unlike the Sewtopia Swap, attendees sign up in advance and are assigned a swap partner.

Rules:

• A signup form will be emailed to all attendees 3 to 4 months before the event for those who would like to participate.
• Once partners are assigned, you must confirm your participation with Rhiannon.
• If you’re on Instagram, please use the hashtag #sewtopiasupersecretswap so others can cheer you on.
• This is a SECRET swap, so don’t give too much away on social media.
• Participants are encouraged to create a mosaic on Instagram or Pinterest to help their partner visualize what they like.
• You will make one handmade item for your partner. This could be a mini quilt, tote bag, or another small handmade project tailored to their tastes.
• Participants should also include $10 to $15 worth of small extras along with the handmade gift.
• One small gift should be secretly left at your partner’s sewing station on Thursday or Friday. The final handmade gift will be hand delivered or revealed to your partner on Saturday afternoon.
• If you’re posting on Instagram or in the Sewtopia Facebook Group, please use the hashtag so others can cheer you on and support your creative process.

Sewtopia Charleston will take place at the Hyatt House Charleston / Historic District, located at 560 King Street in the heart of downtown Charleston. This modern hotel blends contemporary comfort with Southern charm and is within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and historic landmarks throughout the city.
