Rashida Coleman-Hale designed Reign in the summer of 2020. She says, "It was such a difficult time for not just myself, but Black people all over this country and the planet. We were finally being seen, but for all the wrong reasons. I'm so amazed by my people and all of the things that we have managed to accomplish and overcome in this life despite being subject to a system that wasn't built for us to succeed. Black people are Kings and Queens! So, I created Reign as a reminder to myself, my husband, my children, my people that we must own our power and remember who we are." Rashida designed a range of beautiful, jewel-toned cottons with lots of metallic gold sparkles. Three coordinating canvases were inspired the tranquility she felt at sand duns she visited, empty and peaceful at the height of quarantine.
A Production Designer at Google, Rashida Coleman-Hale has been making things ever since she can remember. She studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Not sure if fashion was her calling, she traded her sewing machine in for a computer and worked as a freelance graphic designer. Her passion for sewing rekindled in 2006 after the arrival of her first child, and she began a blog to document her re-born creative life. Rashida has since published two sewing books, created a fabric lines for Timeless Treasure & Cloud 9 Fabrics, and was a founding member of Cotton+Steel.
In Koi Pond, Rashida revisited some of the art from early in her design career, and recreated it in new colors with a more experience eye. She wanted the color palette to feel like a sunny day at the lake - lots of warm peaches, yellows, and toffees, with pops of deeper teals. Her large-scale Smile & Wave print on canvas would be perfect for totes and home dec, and we envision her two rayons as blouses and long dresses.
