Gingham, often associated with Americana, has origins in either Malaysia or France from the 17th century, initially appearing as stripes. It became popular in checked patterns by the English and Dutch around 1800, typically made from cotton or muslin. Small gingham checks in red, blue, and natural are ideal neutrals for quilts and sewing projects.
Twenty years ago, French General started in a barn in upstate New York, showcasing Kaari's favorite items like old French linens and textiles. The shop later moved to New York City and Los Angeles, evolving into a retail space, workshop, and design studio. Since 2008, Kaari and her husband JZ have designed over 30 fabric collections and 60 quilt patterns for Moda, characterized by historical florals and a signature red hue. French General also offers interior fabrics, wall coverings, jewelry kits, and embroidery supplies. In summer, Kaari hosts the French General Getaway in France, where women learn crafting and cooking. Kaari resides in Los Angeles, focusing on creative projects and teaching workshops globally.
