TARA FAUGHNAN

I am a professional freelance textile designer and quilter living and working in Oakland, CA. I started to quilt around 2001 or so, using as my guide a reprint of the 1931 edition of 101 Patchwork Patterns by Ruby Short McKim. I had no idea such things existed as rotary cutters, plastic templates, freezer paper etc. I spent many happy weeks tracing around cardboard templates and cutting out my pieces with a pair of scissors. When I told a woman at my local quilt shop how my first quilt was going, she promptly introduced me to the wall of rulers, cutting mats and gadgets. Thus began a long love affair with my faithful rotary cutter. I still have her, she's worn down and a bit squeaky, but she fits my hand like we were made for each other.

Somewhere along the way, my love of quilting led me to school and on to a career in textile design, with clients including Michael Miller Fabrics and Pottery Barn Kids. I find inspiration in forms, shapes and the place where 2 seams meet. Color interaction is the key inspiration that drives me. It's that intuitive moment when you put two colors together, and then two more, and two more after that that I focus on. The explorations are endless and I strive to try to walk the line of discomfort and still make everything work together as a whole.

I draw a lot of inspiration from the simple bold geometry of antique quilts, the gorgeous bright colors from textiles around the world, and freedom and spontaneity found in unconventional and improvisationally pieced quilts. When I look at my current work, I see all 3 of these aspects represented. I like to use simple geometry, complex color interaction and find the line the exists somewhere between harmony and discord.

I’m Cathi, the hands and heart behind Gertrude Made.

I’m mumma to three young children, living the country life with my farmer husband in rural Western Australia.I learnt to sew under the watchful eye of my Nana when I was little. She was a patient teacher and a perfectionist and I am thankful every day for all the knowledge she imparted.

I have a passion for vintage fabrics and I love creating dresses that make ladies feel beautiful inside and out. I find joy in sewing, so when you wear one of my dresses, I hope you feel the love that goes into each and every stitch.

I joined the Ella Blue team in 2016 to release my first fabric line called Outback Wife. Ella Blue is an inspirational fabric house, thoughtfully developed by talented Australian designers. Using a thoughtful design process that takes well more than a year I committed to bring fabrics that you will love and cherish not only for their beauty, but also for the story and meaning behind them.

Venue FAQ

Hyatt Regency Milwaukee
333 West Kilbourn Avenue
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, 53203

Lunches will be provided in your full registration fee for Friday and Saturday. You will be on your own for dinner. When we chose the location for Sewtopia | Milwaukee, we put it smack in the middle of downtown, so you won’t have a hard time finding a good place to eat. If you need a suggestion of places to eat, let us know and we’ll get you a list.

Other FAQ

We will contact you via email 3 months before the event with important details via email. If you haven’t heard from us, check your spam (and mark us NOT SPAM). You will also be invited to our Facebook group to discuss details. Also keep tabs on our Instagram account for updates.

Kit fees are determined by the instructor and separate from the registration fee. Sewtopia will collect kit fees for the instructors and go directly to them after the event. If you choose to pay the instructor directly, they will collect at the beginning of each class.

One of the things we manage with each event is sewing machines. Making sure everyone has a sewing machine is extremely important.

Sewtopia provides fifty (50) sewing machines for our events. Sewing machines are first come first serve. We will contact one month after registration to confirm that you have a sewing machine reserved in your name. We will also ask whether you can bring your personal sewing machine instead of using one of the Juki sewing machines, especially if you’re local or traveling to the event via car. If you are on the waitlist and purchase a ticket, then you will likely not get a machine since it’s first come, first served.

Sewtopia Registration tickets are non-refundable, except in the event that we can find another person to purchase the ticket. Refunds are given in the original form of payment. Refunds are also contingent on amount of time until the event occurs.

  • 11 months to 5 months from the event – refund in full minus the $50 administration fee
  • 4 months to 3 months from the event – refund 50% of the total ticket cost
  • 2 months to 1 month from the event – refund 0% but you have the right to sell your ticket on your own. The transfer fee of $50 still applies.

Please make sure you have received the funds before transferring your ticket. Once you’ve received your funds please email us at [email protected] and we’ll arrange the details with you and the new attendee.
